Creative ways to keep your pet happily hydrated
Water is essential. That's obvious. But here's something that might surprise you: many pets, especially cats, live in a state of mild, chronic dehydration. And just setting out a bowl of water isn't always enough to fix it.
The good news is that boosting your pet's hydration can be simple, delicious, and even fun.
Why Hydration Matters More Than You Think
Proper hydration supports digestion, kidney function, joint health, skin and coat condition, and overall energy. When pets don't get enough moisture, you might notice things like dry skin, low energy, concentrated urine, or digestive sluggishness.
Cats are especially prone to underhydrating because their ancestors were desert animals who got most of their moisture from prey. That instinct to "not drink much" can work against them when they're eating a primarily dry diet.
Easy Ways to Add More Moisture
Bone broth is one of the simplest and most popular hydration boosters. A splash of pet-safe bone broth over kibble or served on its own makes water more appealing and adds beneficial nutrients like collagen and amino acids. Just make sure it's made without onions, garlic, or added salt.
Goat milk is another favorite at our shop. It's naturally easier to digest than cow's milk, packed with probiotics, and most dogs and cats love the taste. A small amount as a topper or a frozen treat on a warm day goes a long way.
Wet food or fresh food is one of the most effective ways to increase daily moisture intake. Even if your pet eats kibble as their primary diet, mixing in some wet food a few times a week makes a noticeable difference.
Lick mats are a fun tool that encourages slower, more intentional consumption. Spread some goat milk, broth, or a pureed food topper on a lick mat and pop it in the freezer. It keeps your pet engaged and hydrated at the same time.
Small Upgrades, Big Impact
You don't have to overhaul your pet's entire routine. Sometimes it's as simple as swapping out the water in their bowl more frequently (fresh water is more appealing), adding a splash of broth to their meal, or offering a frozen goat milk treat after a walk.
Hydration is one of those quiet foundations of health. It's easy to overlook, but once you start paying attention to it, you'll likely notice positive changes in your pet's energy, coat, and overall well-being.
