A simple guide to the options on (and off) the shelf
One of the most common questions we hear at the shop is: "What's the difference between all these types of food?" It's a great question, and one that can feel overwhelming when you're standing in front of a wall of options.
Here's a straightforward look at the most common pet food formats, what makes each one unique, and how to think about which might be right for your pet.
Kibble (Dry Food)
Kibble is what most people picture when they think of pet food. It's convenient, shelf-stable, and widely available. Quality varies enormously between brands, though; a premium kibble with named proteins and whole food ingredients is a completely different product than a budget bag full of fillers and by-products.
Best for: Pet parents who need convenience and consistency. A solid foundation when paired with fresh food toppers or supplements.
Raw Food
Raw diets aim to mimic what dogs and cats might eat in a more natural setting: uncooked meat, bones, organs, and sometimes fruits and vegetables. Many pet parents see improvements in coat quality, energy, and digestion after switching.
Raw does require safe handling practices (just like handling raw meat for your own cooking), and it's typically stored frozen.
Best for: Pet parents who want to feed as close to a whole food, species-appropriate diet as possible.
Freeze-Dried
Freeze-dried food starts as raw food and then has the moisture removed through a low-temperature process. This preserves the nutritional profile of raw feeding while making it pantry-friendly, no freezer required. You simply rehydrate with water at mealtime.
Best for: Anyone who likes the idea of raw feeding but wants the convenience of a shelf-stable option. Also great for travel and as meal toppers.
Dehydrated
Similar to freeze-dried, dehydrated food has its moisture removed, but through gentle, low-heat drying rather than freezing. It's typically rehydrated with warm water before serving. The texture ends up closer to a home-cooked meal.
Best for: Pet parents looking for a lightly processed, whole food option that feels like home cooking without the prep work.
Mixing and Matching
Here's something a lot of people don't realize: you don't have to choose just one. Many of our customers use kibble as a base and rotate in raw toppers, freeze-dried mix-ins, or fresh additions like goat milk. Adding variety to your pet's bowl can support better nutrition and keep mealtime interesting.
