Spring Cleaning and Your Pets: A Pet-Safe Guide

Spring Cleaning and Your Pets: A Pet-Safe Guide

A fresh home and a healthy pet: you can absolutely have both

Spring cleaning feels great: open windows, deep scrubs, a fresh start. And with a little awareness about the products you use, it's easy to keep your home fresh and pet-friendly at the same time.

The good news? Keeping your home clean and pet-safe isn't hard once you know what to watch for.

Artificial Scents and Cleaners

This is a big one. Many conventional cleaning products contain chemicals that can irritate your pet's respiratory system, skin, and eyes. Pets are closer to the floor where residues linger, and they groom themselves, licking paws that have walked across freshly cleaned surfaces.

Look for cleaners that are free of chlorine, ammonia, and phthalates. Better yet, swap to pet-safe cleaning brands or simple solutions like diluted white vinegar for everyday surfaces.

Candles and Air Fresheners

That spring-scented candle may smell lovely to you, but many candles release harmful fumes and soot that pets breathe in right alongside you. Plug-in air fresheners and aerosol sprays can be just as problematic.

If you love a good-smelling home, consider beeswax candles (which burn cleaner) or simply opening the windows to let fresh air do the work.

Essential Oils: Use With Caution

Essential oils have become incredibly popular, but some are genuinely dangerous for pets, especially cats, who lack certain liver enzymes needed to process them. Oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, and citrus can cause anything from skin irritation to serious toxicity.

If you use a diffuser, make sure your pet can always leave the room, and research every oil before using it in a shared space.

Don't Forget the Pet Stuff

Spring cleaning is also a great time to refresh your pet's things:

  • Wash food and water bowls thoroughly, ideally daily, but at minimum weekly. Biofilm buildup on bowls can harbor bacteria. Use hot water and dish soap; skip the heavy-duty cleaners.
  • Clean out old toys and check for wear. Toys with stuffing coming out or small parts breaking off are a choking hazard.
  • Rotate toys to keep things interesting. Put some away and bring out "new" ones later.
  • Wash beds and blankets on a pet-safe cycle. Your dryer's heat cycle is one of the best ways to deal with allergens and dander.

A Cleaner Home, a Safer Home

You don't have to choose between a clean house and a healthy pet. It just takes a little awareness about what's in the products you use and how your furry family members interact with their environment.
